This tapestry was on display in the Hall of Honour in the Belgian Pavilion at the New York World's Fair in 1939. It was produced by the Brussels firm of Bracquenié from cartoons by the avant-garde painter Floris Jespers. The subject illustrates the first Belgian settlers arriving in New York in 1623.

The tapestry was part of a series known as "Het Plaisier der Goden" (The Pleasure of the Gods), produced by Judocus de Vos after designs by Jan van Orley (1665-1735) and Augustin Coppens (1668-1740). This example was acquired in Paris in 1881 by New York merchant and art collector Robert L. Stuart. It hung in his mansion at Fifth Avenue and 68th Street and after 1893 was displayed in the Stuart Gallery at the Lenox Library.
