This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.

There is no original "Culpepper Minutemen" flag extant. This reproduction is derived from a description and sketch in B. J. Lossing's "Pictoral Field Book of the Revolution". This flag was the standard of approximately 100 minutemen from Culpepper (Fairfax?), VA, under the command of Col. patrick Henry's 1st Virginia Regiment. They marched on Williamsburg and participated in the battle of Great Bridge at Norfolk, VA.
