Wool Spanish flag with two red horizontal stripes with a yellow stripe between; ball and cross crowned medallion with a yellow castle and a red crowned lion in the center of the yellow stripe; linen hoist with the remainder of a cotton cord strung through; inscribed on the hoist in ink, "Presented to Mr. Aaron Vanderbilt as a Memento of 1898/ by John Lewis Coburger" in printed script.

This flag was given to Aaron Vanderbilt by John Lewis Coburger as a memento of the Spanish American war of 1898. Vanderbilt served as a senior officer in command of Naval forces in New York State during the war. He has also been creditd with the establishment of the U.S. Naval Reserve as the auxillary to the Navy, introducing legislation to the 53rd Congress to provide for the enrollment of officers and men of the merchant marine into this reserve on application and qualification.

Created in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, Operation Sail has been producing tall ship events to commemorate significant times in American history. To commemorate the year 2000, Operation Sail produced OpSail 2000, which featured a total of eight participating ports on the East Coast of the U.S. OpSail visited New York Harbor the week of July fourth with events that included a parade of over 200 ships up the Hudson river. This banner represents types of souvenirs commemorating this event.
