Description: 
Blue and white silk flag tassels; blue and white twisted cord folded in half and knotted at the top forming a small loop;dropped into two drapery tassels; top of the tassels is a wooden ball covered in white silk and blue netting; wooden bell shape covered in blue and white checks; blue cord wrapped around base with blue and white braided fringe.

Gallery Label: 
This pennant is part of a set made with all of the names of the buildings designed by Cass Gilbert (1859-1934). Gilbert was an architect and surveyor. He worked early in his career as a draftsman for McKim, Meade and White. He later moved to Minnesota, and in 1882 won the competition for his design of the State Capitol. He returned to New York and is best known for the Woolworth Building (1913) in lower Manhattan.

Silk American flag of the 135th Regiment of the New York State Volunteers; originally it probably had thirty-four white embroidered stars on a blue ground and thirteen red and white stripes; wrapped with red, white and blue ribbon ties; attatched to a wooden flag staff with a thin metal pole strung through the hoist and metal rings attatched to the flagstaff; metal cuff and joint holding to halves of the flagstaff together (folds together for storage); metal spear-shaped finial on a ball; metal presentation plaque at center of flagstaff.

Anthony Wayne, for whom the 135th Regiment of the New York State Volunteers was named, was a Revolutionary War General who commanded the Pennsylvania lines. He had sucesses at West Point, Morristown, N.J. and Ticonderoga. The flag was carried by the the late Samuel Pierce of Company C 6th New York, Heavy Artillery.
