Description: 
Long, rectangular carpet runner with wool warp and linen weft; pattern of blue, red, brown, and yellow stripes of varying width; cotton overcast stitching.

Gallery Label: 
According to the accession records, this runner was made around 1800 by Ada Weightman of Georgia, Vermont. The maker's granddaughter claimed that Mrs. Weightman planted the flax seed from which the linen was made, spun the yarn, and prepared the dyes used to color the fabric. Brown was made from butternut bark, and green from boiled drugs(?); blue came in "chalky chunks"; urine water was also used.

This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.

Typographia No. 7 was a German-American typesetters and compositers' union founded in 1869 and discontinued on September 1, 1947, when it joined New York Typographical Union No. 6. This flag was presented to the union by the Ladies Auxilliary in 1902 in the New York Labor Temple on East 84th Street. At this time the headquaters of Typographia No. 7 was in People's Hall, East 4th St, between 2nd and 3rd Ave.

Blue silk Regimental flag of the 12th Calvary New York Volunteer Guard originally painted with the seal of New York City (Astor seal) in the center, shield with beavers and cider casks divided by windmill blades, shield flanked by a Native American holding a bow and a sailor; in a gold scrolled medallion; red banner above inscribed with the regiment name in red and gold; banner below inscribed, "PRESENTED BY THE CITY OF NEW YORK"; gold silk fringe; attatched to a wooden flag staff with a metal rod strung through the hoist and metal rings attached to the staff; metal spear-shaped finial on a ball with a cross bar through it and an ovoid rest; metal ovoid cup base.
