This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.

In 1816, the Common Council of New York City encouraged enlistment in fire companies by exempting firemen from jury duty and service in the militia. The term "Exempt" in association with the fire department in New York developed from this policy. In 1865, the volunteer fire departments were disbanded and replaced with professional firemen.

It traveled between New York City and Albany. The "Washington Irving" was built by the New York Ship-building Company, Camden, NJ in 1912. The HDL provided service along the Hudson until 1949, when it was disbanded.
