Description:
Ethnography. Studies of Native Americans: a ritual undertaken by a young man who desires to become a medicine man, tribal doctor and spiritual leader. The tribe encircles a man standing near a flexible pole hung with buffalo skulls and attached by two tethers with hooks to his chest muscle. The man holds an animal pelt-probably his ritual 'medicine bag', and a bow and arrow and must stare unceasingly into the sun from dawn until dusk without falling while men play drums and rattles nearby. If he stands, all agree he possesses "great medicine"; if he falls, he is disgraced

Description:
Ethnography. Studies of Native Americans: a semi-circle of long haired men sits opposite a semi-circle of men with 'Mohawk-style' hair, while a long pipe is filled and shared; weapons including bows, quivers and shields lay outside the circle, and women and other tribe members stand around the perimeter. When terms are agreed upon, each warrior puffs the pipe as a signal of assent to the treaty

Description:
Ethnography. Studies of Native Americans: men dance and crouch while wearing buffalo heads and pelts, some with the tail, and carrying tomahawks, bows, spears and shields while a drummers plays on the side. Performed when the buffalo disappeared and tribe faced starvation, the dance was kept up day and night until buffalo were found near the village.

Description:
One of a series of 12 watercolor scenes depicting the route of Jim Hazen Hyde's four horse coach "Liberty" between New York and its terminus at Lakewood, New Jersey. The coach ran three times a week from the Holland house, at Fifth Avenue and 30th Street, NYC and the Hotel Laurel-In-The-Pines, Lakewood, a distance of 79 miles taking approximately 9 hours and utilizing up to eleven teams of horses.

Gallery Label:
This is one of a set of twelve watercolors commissioned by James Hazen Hyde (1876-1959) of Mr. Hyde's four-horse coach "Liberty" that depicts scenes along the road on the 1903 run between New York and Lakewood. The society also owns an original illustration by Edward Penfield (q.v.) for use on the poster advertising this route (1947.90). The distance covered by the coach was seventy-nine miles, and eleven teams of horses were used daily.
