Marin, a native of Rutherford, New Jersey, was a leader of the modernist movement in American painting in the early twentieth century. His first general recognition came in 1909 with the exhibition of his work at Alfred Stieglitz's Gallery 291 in New York. He was the subject of a large retrospective exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1936.

She was the literary agent for a number of French authors and playwrights and for George Bernard Shaw, and the author of several books herself, among them an autobiography, "My Crystal Ball" (1923).
