Chateauguai, a chief of the Caribs, the native inhabitants of the island of St. Vincent in the West Indies, was one of the leaders of an unsuccessful revolt against British colonial forces that took place in 1795. This portrait was made while the artist was visiting the island where his uncle, Alexander Anderson (d. 1811), was director of the Botanic Gardens.

Born in Ripon, Wisc., Carrie Lane graduated from the State College of Iowa and eventually became superintendent of schools in Mason City, Iowa. In 1884 she married to Leo Chapman, who died two years later; she became the wife of George William Catt in 1890. As Carrie Chapman Catt, she served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Assn. from 1900 to 1904 and from 1915 until her death. She also founded the National League of Woman Voters, of which she was honorary president.

After serving as his housekeeper for several years, Eliza Brown ("Betsey Bowen") was married to Stephen Jumel (ca. 1754-1832) in 1804. In 1810 Jumel purchased the Robert Morris house, once Washington's headquarters, which is now preserved as a museum. The subject's second husband was Aaron Burr, whom she married in 1833 and sued for divorce the following year. This portrait is the original drawing for a lithograph made by de Becquet Frères for Dutot of Paris (impressions in N-YHS collection).

The subject was the son of Benjamin S. Judah of New York, a merchant who was ruined by the War of 1812. He was the author of three plays, "The Mountain Torrent" (1820), "The Rose of Arragon" (1822), and "A Tale of Lexington" (1823), which was unsuccessfully produced at the Park Theatre, New York. He also wrote dramatic poems and satires; one of the latter, "Gotham and the Gothamites" (1823), caused his imprisonment for libel.

Rufus Jones, a professor of philosophy and a Quaker, was born in South China, Maine, the son of Edwin and Mary (Hoxie) Jones. He taught philosophy at Haverford College from 1893 to 1934 and became a trustee of Bryn Mawr College in 1896. He was a minister of the Society of Friends, and organized the Friends' Service Committee in 1917. He was also the author of many books, among them "Social Law in the Spiritual World" (1904) and "The Flowering of Mysticism" (1939).

He was admitted to the Georgia bar in 1928 and established a practice in Georgia. An avid golfer, he won the U.S. national amateur championship five times between 1924 and 1930, the U.S. national open championship in 1923, 1926, and 1929.
