The subject was born at Nantucket, Mass., the eldest son of Josiah Macy, a merchant captain. In 1828 he and his father founded the shipping and commission house of Josiah Macy and Son in New York. In 1845 William Macy began his banking career when he became a director of the Leather Manufacturer's Bank; three years later he was made a trustee of the Seamen's Bank of Savings, and he later served as its president. He was a benefactor of New York and Roosevelt hospitals.

Mary Cumming was the daughter of Robert Cumming, merchant and high sheriff of the county of Monmouth, New Jersey, and Mary (Noble) Cumming of Freehold, New Jersey. She married the Rev. Alexander McWhorter in October 1758. Mrs. McWhorter was one of the sponsors of the Female Free School in Newark. Her portrait was a gift to the Society from her great-grandson.
