The subject, eldest son of George Jackson and Elizabeth (von Brake) Jackson, was brought up on the Virginia frontier and became a civil engineer. He served in the Virginia legislature from 1798 to 1801. In the latter year he was admitted to the bar and subsequently served in Congress until 1810, and again from 1813 to 1817. In 1819 President James Monroe appointed him the first federal judge from the Western District of Virginia, which position he held until his death.

The subject was born in New York, the son of Henry Baldwin Hyde and Annie (Fitch) Hyde, and succeeded his father as president of the Equitable Life Assurance Society after serving as vice-president from 1899 to 1905. He was a founder of the Alliance Française in America, received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor from the French government, and was a member of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques. He was also a member of The New-York Historical Society.

The subject, a famous cartoonist and founder and editor of "Puck," was born in Vienna and came to the U.S. in 1867. For a while in the 1870s Keppler drew caricatures for "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper." He became famous for his lithographic cartoons of political and social figures, which were the epitome of satirical humor in America at that time.

General David Hunter graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1822. After attaining the rank of captain, he resigned from the army in 1836 to settle in Chicago. He returned to military service six years later, however, and served as a major in the Mexican War. In the Civil War he fought for the North and rose to the rank of major general. After the war, Hunter was a member of the honor guard that accompanied the body of President Lincoln to Springfield, Illinois.

Gallery Label:
A native of Tennessee, Hull was a member of the state legislature from 1893 to 1897, and from 1907 to 1931 served almost continuously in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected to the senate in 1931, but resigned two years later to become secretary of state under Frankling D. Roosevelt. After retiring from the office in 1944 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Hudson was appointed captain in the Union army in 1863. He later joined General Ulysses S. Grant at Vicksburg and was with him on his campaigns from Chattanooga and Culpeper to Appomatox. In April 1865 he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel and made General Grant's aide-de-camp.
