Educator and philosopher John Dewey received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1884 and subsequently taught at the University of Chicago. He later joined the faculty of Columbia University where he remained until his retirement in 1930. Kaufman considered the subject one of the brilliant men who gave the vital force to what she called "the American century."
