This watercolor is based on a drawing of the same title by Michele Felice Corne (q.v.) published in The Naval Temple (Boston, 1816), opp. p.17, and in American Naval Battles (Boston, 1831), opp. p.15. The title is a sarcastic reference to the way in which the United States met the demands of Tripoli for the payment of tribute in order that American merchant ships might be free from interference by the pirates of the Barbary States.
