This is a companion view to Strickland's view of Broadway, showing Grace and Trinity Churches. I.N.P. Stokes points out that the date of this picture must be between 1809, when Grace Church was completed, and 1814-1815, when according to the New York directories, the engraver John Scoles, (whose sign--"Scoles, Egraver"--appears over the doorway on the house, at the left) moved to 67 Bowery. Prior to its acquisition by the Society this watercolor was badly torn and covered with a coat of varnish.

In this view of fashionable lower Broadway, the large house on the left was the residence of John R. Livingston until 1816. From 1817-to 1824 the United States Branch Bank occupied the house, and it then became a boardinghouse. Also depicted are Trinity Church and Grace Church.
