This structure was erected in 1702 by Myndert Van Kleek. The following note by the artist appears on a separate piece of cardboard: "The Van Kleek House, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., N.Y. Herein the Committee of Correspondence met in 1775. Herein "Mother Ann," founder of the Shaker Society, was imprisioned in 1776. Herein the first session of the Republican Legislature of the State of New York was held in January 1778. The House was demolished in 1835..."

Gallery Label:
The Amigo Protector was a Portuguese vessel on which the de Neuvilles sailed from New York in May 1814 on their return journey to Europe. Montauk Point, at the eastern end of Long Island, was the last land seen on the American coast. The de Neuvilles disembarked at Liverpool, England, on July 8. Two days later they were in London and "a few days" later in Paris.

Dr. Alexander Anderson (1775-1870) (q.v.), one of the first engravers (as distinguished from cutters) on wood in the United States, lived in two homes on Broome Street. From 1825 to 1828 he resided at 474 Broom Street, between Greene and Wooster streets; and from 1828 to 1859 at 279 Broome Street, between Allen and Eldrige steets. In 1859 he moved to 157 Orchard Street, of which the Society owns a watercolor by Abram Hosier.
