This watercolor shows Brunswick dragoons of the Regiment von Riedesel cutting their way through encircling American forces at the Battle of Bennington, August 16, 1777, on the Walloomsac River in northern New York. Of two hundred German dragoons who fought bravely under Lieutenant-Colonel Baum, only one officer and twenty-nine men survived to return to Burgoyne's British army before it was compelled to surrender at Saratoga.

The caption by Lefferts at the lower left identifies the subject as a drummer of the light infantry company of the 49th Regiment, 1777. The caption accompanying the published version of this study mistakenly identifes the soldier as a drummer of the light infantry company of the 5th Regiment. Though both the 5th and 49th regiments had facings of green, the lace of the 5th Regiment was white with two red stripes while the lace of the 49th Regiment was white with two red and one green.

The three-story brick hotel was designed in 1797 by Samuel and John Hooker, father and brother of Philip Hooker, the architect. It was erected in 1798 on the bank of the Mohawk River by Gerrit Boon, agent for the Holland Land Company. In 1805 a Polish traveler called it a "magnificent hotel."
