The de Neuvilles visited Niagara Falls on September 1, 1807, and it must have been on this occasion that Madame de Neuville sketched Peter of Buffalo at nearby Tonawanda, N.Y. Dr. William N. Fenton suggests that this may be Tall Peter of Buffalo Creek, who joined the Christian church in 1823 and was one of the most active chiefs in promoting the 1838 sale of Indian lands in northwestern New York. Ethel Brant Montour suggests that it is Peter Blacksnake, the Seneca chief.
