Gallery Label: 
Hosier mistakenly calls this the Van Cortlandt "manor" house, a late seventeenth century dwelling located at Croton in upper Westchester County. The Van Cortlandt mansion depicted was erected in 1748 in the area known as Kingsbridge or Lower Yonkers, and is now a historic house museum in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Riverdale is the name applied to the rising upland west of the mansion.

This view of a distant upstate New York City may possibly be of Troy, New York, situated on a tidal stream. It is a preliminary work sketch by engraver John Hill from an original study by his son, John William Hill (q.v.), for the projected Erie Canal Series of engravings, but was never published. Only one unlettered proof etched in line is known of this view, also owned by the Society. Numbers at the upper right serve as a guide for the engraver.

The white mother of this half-blood son may have been Mary Jemison (1743-1833) who was captured in 1758 an adopted in girlhood by Indians with hom she thereafter lived, and was known as the "White Woman of the Genesee." This may possibly be her son Jesse (1776/7-1812), or her grandson Jacob who entered Dartmouth College in 1816, aged twenty-seven.

This scene of an Indian family on an autumn hunt was probably sketched near Utica, New York in the fall of 1807. The father has a deer slung over his shoulders and uses a bow for balance; the mother is in the center and a small boy is at the left. The drawing perfectly illustrates the baron's comment in his memoirs on the traditional division of labor between the sexes of the natives: "The men do nothing, while the women are always encumbered with cultivating the earth..."
