The Saint Nicholas Society was established in 1835 by Washington Irving, to promote the preservation of the remembrace of the first Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam. Saint Nicholas was the patron saint of the Dutch. The society met for a grand ceremonial banquet once a year in December. The shield-shaped ribbon commemorates the 401st anniversary celebration of Columbus's discovery of America and the New York Columbian Exposition held in 1892.
