Description: 
Tortoise shell sewing case with a hinge on one side of the top and a metal clasp fastener at the opposite side, with metal inlay on both sides and on the top; both sides have the same design, the top has a garland swaggered over an oval with a sunburst design, the bottom part of the case has a garland draped over two scrolls and urns on either side of the scrolls; the case contains two flat metal awls, a needle threader, a (broken) pair of scissors, a two leaf ivory note pad with a metal hinge on one end, and the lid to the case's needle compartment, all objects are long and slender and fit into compartments shaped to store each item specifically; one object if missing from the case.

Brown leather sewing kit with strap on the flap at top with a metal clasp closure at the end; when opened, there are four compartments, one at top contains scissors and ear spoon, one at the bottom contains a card with three white glass buttons, a paper with felt attached, and a felt sewing book with pins, there is also a length of white cotton twill tape.

This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. Before the mid-nineteenth century, Americans imported their pins primarily from England. Early pins were hand-forged of two separate parts-a head and a shaft. Beginning in the 1820s, pin making machines, which molded warm brass wire into the shape of a pin, paved the way for mass production of this essential sewing tool.

Johanna Maria (Jenny) Lind (1820-1887) was born in Stockholm and as a child began studying there at the Conservatory of Music. She studied in paris with Manuel Garcia around 1840. Known as the "Swedish Nightingale," she toured Europe in the 1840s and won a popular reputation. She came to the U.S. under the management of P. T. Barnum from 1850-1852, endearing herself to the American public.
