This ribbon commemorates the laying of the first cornerstone of the Washington Monument in 1847. Major construction took place between 1847-56 and 1876-84, although plans for a national monument began as early as 1783. The President's death in 1799 rekindled public interest in the previously proposed memorial, and with the leadership of John Marshall and James Madison, a 1936 design competition chose architect Robert Mills' neoclassically inspired obelisk and collonade design for the memorial.

The American Republican Party, formed in 1843, attracted nativists and promised reform at a time when dissatisfaction with government was widespread. In the elections of 1844 it nominated as its mayoral candidate the publisher James Harper, who won the election. Harper and other Native American Democrats failed to fill their campaign promises and were replaced by Democrats in the elections of 1845. The copper engraved central image of George Washington is identical to that in 1940.102 and INV.5476; ribbons which commemorate the Washington Monument.

This ribbon commemorates the 1842 completion of the Croton Aqueduct, which provided the first dependable water supply for New York City. The water conduit spanned a distance of forty-one miles, from the upstate New York Croton Dam to a reservoir in what is today Central Park. The execution of John B. Jervis's design for the aqueduct cost upward of $13 million.
