Amélie Rives, who was born in Richmond, Va., the daughter of Col. Alfred Landon Rives and Sadie (McMurdo) Rives, was destined to become a well-known literary figure as well as a prominent socialite. Her first novel, "The Quick or the Dead?," was published in Philadelphia in 1888. That same year she married John Armstrong Chanler, a lawyer of New York; they were divorced in 1895. Her second husband was Prince Pierre Troubetskoy (d. 1936), a Russian artist; they were married in 1896.

Sarah Helen Townsend was the daughter of Isaac and Mary (Austen) Townsend. She married Thomas Buchanan Winthrop (1841-1900), the son the Henry Rogers Winthrop, on June 4, 1872. Her husband was a lawyer, a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and served as a Fellow of Yale University from 1891 until his death. The Winthrops maintained residences in New York and Newport, Rhode Island.
