Jacob Lawrence moved to Harlem as a young boy and drew inspiration for his later career as a painter from observing African-American culture during the Harlem Renaissance. He is now celebrated as a great American artist and storyteller.

Have you ever had a knish? Do you like them round or square? Baked or fried? Join us for a special reading of The Knish War on Rivington Street with the book’s author Joanne Oppenheim! After the reading, stick around to ask the author all about the real historical event the story was based on and maybe even get a copy of the book signed.

This Veterans Day weekend, we’re exploring the history of the Vietnam War through Lai’s National Book Award-winning novel in verse about a young girl’s transition from Vietnam to Alabama after the fall of Saigon. Lai will join us to meet families and discuss her book. Then we’ll explore part of the Museum’s landmark exhibition The Vietnam War in a family friendly mini-tour.

On the eve of Hispanic Heritage Month, join us to discuss this epic tale of an 11-year-old girl forced to move from Chile to Maine to escape a brutal dictatorship in the 1970s. Skype with the author of this Pura Belpré Award winner and ask her all your questions! Then explore primary sources related to the book with other families.
