In conjunction with our museum-wide Citizenship Project, Sunday Story Time is featuring stories about immigration throughout the month of May. This week we are reading Hiromi’s Hands by Lynne Barasch.

Hiromi’s Hands is the true story of Hiromi Suzuki, one of the world’s first female sushi chefs.  Hiromi narrates this story about her family’s immigration to New York City and her determination to learn her father’s art of sushi making.

Rosalba imagines that she and her abuela can fly.  The two take off on an adventure over New York City as abuela shows her granddaughter all the things she encountered when she immigrated. They fly over factories, trains, parks, docks, and even the Statue of Liberty!

Since 2013 the DiMenna Children’s History Museum and New-York Historical Society has awarded an annual prize to the best middle grade novel about American history. This special book club meeting will feature the (yet to be announced) winning book and author for 2016! We’ll also visit our galleries to explore artifacts related to the book.
