This serving dish was part of a tea and coffee serviced presented to John Roach (1815-1887) on April 30, 1874 at a lavish gentlemen's dinner held at Delmonico's restaurant in New York City. Honored by eighty-two businessmen for "all he had done to revive American shipbuilding," Roach was regarded as a champion of the industry and its workers. The Roach presentation received extensive attention in contemporary newspapers. The New York Times described it as "a magnificent collection of plate, worthy in every way of the high reputation of the Gorham Manufacturing Company." Made in the years following Gorham's expansion, the service required the work of numerous specialist craftsmen with its construction taking more than sixty-four hours to complete.

Americans followed the English habit of taking milk with their tea, a custom established by the 1720s. Silver milk pots were imported from England and sold by numerous jewelers and merchants in New York, providing local craftsmen with stylish models for their own wares. Silversmiths like Myer Myers sold large numbers of milk pots; at least fifteen examples marked by Myers are extant. The design of this milk pot would have harmonized with the mahogany tilt-top tables fashionable at the time for serving tea: the pot's cabriole legs and scalloped rim echo the tripod base and pie-crust border of high-end tea tables of the era.

Gallery Label:
Pear-shaped coffeepots with stepped domed covers, like this example, were popular in America during the 1770s. Brasher's pot balances the simple grace of the unadorned body with vigorous cast elements, including an acanthus- and shell-ornamented spout and bold gadrooning on the foot. While the pot's overall design and ornament are cosmopolitan, the small band of meander wire below the juncture of the body and foot is a subtle nod to New York's vernacular tradition. There is evidence that the vessel may have been enhanced prior to its sale to the Historical Society; its bold pineapple finial, which appears slightly oversized for the pot, is bolted to the cover rather than soldered and is probably a later replacement.
