Round bulbous body divided into four quadrants by one horizontal band around the center and two vertically bands below the handle and below the spout; seated on a ring base; short narrow neck with a small triangular spout; round, low domed lid with a grooved strap handle applied to the top; c-curve handle covered in braided wicker; applied, enameled shield with three gold lion passant on a red ground below, "JERSEY" in copper letters on a white ground in the upper quadrant left of the handle; upper quadrant right of the handle engraved, "L J G" in script; makers' marks on the neck.

Spun and cast electroplated silver teapot; bulbous round body on a molded stepped foot joined to the body by a gadrooned pedestal; originally had an applied gadrooned band around the foot ring; body flares to a concave shoulder with a floral band around the base and a convex band below the vertically applied reeded rim; hinged lid, flat at the edges and raised in the center to a low dome; cast floral finial; cast spout, in two vertically halves, with scrolled acanthus decoration on the front and back of the base and an acanthus pendant at the lip; cast s-scroll handle with an acanthus leaf thumbpiece; no maker's marks.

Gallery Label: 
This creamer was part of a tea and coffee serviced presented to John Roach (1815-1887) on April 30, 1874 at a lavish gentlemen's dinner held at Delmonico's restaurant in New York City. Honored by eighty-two businessmen for "all he had done to revive American shipbuilding," Roach was regarded as a champion of the industry and its workers. The Roach presentation received extensive attention in contemporary newspapers. The New York Times described it as "a magnificent collection of plate, worthy in every way of the high reputation of the Gorham Manufacturing Company." Made in the years following Gorham's expansion, the service required the work of numerous specialist craftsmen with its construction taking more than sixty-four hours to complete.
