The well-known firm of Brewster and Co. was listed at its old address of 272 Broome Street, N.Y.C., in the New York City directory for 1873-1874, but at its new establishment at 1581 Broadway, between 47th and 48th streets, in 1874-1875. When the new Brewster establishment opened, Edward A. Sargent was listed as an architect at 98 Broadway, New York City. The watercolor is probably an architectural rendition dating from the time of the building's erection.

This watercolor depicts the end of the encounter off the Brazilian coast between the United States frigate Constitution, 44 guns, Commodore William Bainbridge, and the British frigate Java, 38 guns, Captain Henry Lambert, on December 29, 1812. After a battle of more than two hours, the Java was completely dismasted and was compelled to surrender. The Java's striking of her colors signals the end of the battle.

This is a view of the engagement between the United States sloop-of-war Wasp, 18 guns, Master Commandant Jacob Jones, and the British sloop-of-war Frolic, 22 guns, Captain Thomas Whinyates, in the Atlantic ocean between Bermuda and Halifax on October 18, 1812. Two hours after the battle, the British ship-of-the-line Poictiers, 74 guns, hove in sight and compelled the two smaller vessels to surrender. The artist is not identified.
