This is the finished watercolor drawn by Strickland from the original pencil sketch, also in the Society's collection (1958.63), which was done during his visit on October 16-17, 1794. The watercolor has been given the date ca. 1794, but it could have been rendered anytime subsequent to the artist's visit. An interesting watercolor replica (18 1/8 x 24 7/8 inches) of Strickland's 1794 view owned by the Society was in the collection of Hirschel and Adler Galleries, New York City, in 1978.

Description: 
The East River and the western end of Long Island appear at the left and the city of New York is at the right. Grand Street is in the immediate foreground, and the fence in the middle distance runs along the line of Division Street. The road along which the two figures in the foreground are walking is a continuation of Clinton Street.

This sketch was made from the home of John R. Livingston when St. Memin came to New York with his father in 1793. He also made a watercolor and copperplate print, which he colored and offered for sale in 1796. This sketch, which preceded all other forms of the picture, was purchased from a bookseller on the Paris quays in 1901 by John Anderson, Jr., from whom the Society acquired it in March 1909.

The subject, the son of Leonard Cutting and Dorothy (Crowe) Cutting of Norfolk, England, came to America about 1750 and first managed plantations in Virginia and New Jersey. He was ordained a priest in the Church of England in the 1760s and thereafter served as a missionary in Brunswick, N.J. He became rector of St. George's Church, Hempstead, L. I., in 1766. His portrait is one of the earliest American profile portraits, a form that reached in zenith years later in work of Saint-Mémin.

This is a view of the forty-minute naval encounter between the American brig Enterprise, 14 guns, Captain William Burrows, and the British brig Boxer, 14 guns, Captain Samuel Blyth, off the coast of Main on September 5, 1813. The encounter resulted in the surrender of the Boxer. Both captains received mortal wounds from which they died, and both are buried side by side in the Eastern Cemetery at Portland, Maine, which overlooks Casco Bay.

This view depicts the engagement between the Unied States sloop-of-war Wasp, 18 guns, Master Commandant Jacob Jones, and the British sloop-of-war Frolic, 22 guns, Captain Thomas Whinyates, in the Atlantic ocean between Bermuda and Halifax on October 18, 1812. Two hours after the capture of the British ship-of-the-line Poictiers, 74 guns, hove in sight and compelled the two smaller ships to surrender.
