Description: 
White, red, and black painted leather presentation shield presented to Passaic No. 1 by Neptune Exempt No. 3 of Yonkers, New York; "NEPTUNE" and "EXEMPT" in applied leather lettering on recessed, red painted panels separated by painted image of Neptune at top; large "3" cut out at center and backed by black painted leather, with four small tintype portraits in oval cut-outs surrounding it; "PASSAIC" in applied leather lettering on recessed, red painted panel above recessed, black painted "1" and painted image of a fire engine flanked by stars at bottom; recessed, red and black painted scroll designs and gold and light blue scroll designs painted on surface throughout; gold painted edges; two wooden bars attached for reinforcement on reverse.

Gallery Label: 
This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.
