This type of hat, referred to as a "Hardee hat" or "Jeff Davis hat," was adopted by Jefferson Davis for military use while serving as President Franklin Pierce's Secretary of War (1853-57) and later worn by both the North and the South during the Civil War. Officers' hats typically had brims with edges bound with silk braid; the number of feathers (1-3) was also an indicator of the wearer's status. Our hat is missing the gilded brass "eagle" that secured the brim to one side of the crown.

Dark blue wool felt army dress tailcoat with the single-breasted front cut to the waist, lined with yellow silk; stand-up collar, turned up cuffs and center of back above the tails are embroidered with metal bead and spangle leaf garland decoration; 9 metal buttons up the front, 2 cloth covered buttons above each cuff, 4 metal buttons across the back above tails; gold cord aglet with metal tips on 2 braided sides, 2 plain cords wrap around arm, joined at a loop at the center to attach to the coat.
