Collection of 4 Naval buttons on wooden presentation mount, including circular colored print portrait of buttons' original owner in metal frame covered with glass; identification label on metal plaque at bottom center; the top of the mount is arched, the base is lozenge-shaped, obverse covered with emerald green velvet, base and reverse covered with brown leather; reverse has pocket fitted for collector's catalogue housed in green envelope-style case, which also includes the collector's sign statement of authenticity.

These buttons are from a coat worn by Capt. James Lawrence (1781-1813), who served in the U.S. Navy from 1804-1813. He commanded the Chesapeake during the War of 1812, in the engagement against the British frigate Shannon during which he was mortally wounded. His famous last words are said to have been, "Don't give up the ship!" The New Jersey Historical Society owns the coat to these buttons.
