Dress helmet made of black wool felt over cork; peaks in front and back, both angled downward; large metal shield-breasted eagle insignia on front with crossed cannon and number "1" in relief; braided gold cord suspended from hooks with shield-shaped mounts attached to sides and back of hat; gilded metal scale chin strap attached to buttons molded with crossed cannon attached at either side; black and yellow striped sweatband with quilting, and purple silk(?) lining inside of crown; red horsehair plume (missing holder).

According to the accession records, this helmet was worn by Thomas Henry Barber (father of the donor), who served in the 1st Artillery from 1867 to 1885. New York City directories indicate that Warnock & Co. was located at 519 Broadway from 1858 to 1882.

The 47th Infantry Regiment was one of twelve New York State National Guard infantry regiments that were federalized for service in the Spanish-American War. The 47th Regiment was organized on May 27th, 1862 for a three-month tour of duty. It was recruited entirely in New York City (Brooklyn) and served in the garrison of Washington D.C. during the Civil War. The regiment also served in the draft riots of 1863, the railroad riots of 1877, the quarantine riot on Fire Island of 1892, and the switchman’s strike in Buffalo of 1895. Isaac J. Geery, the original owner of this shako, was Lieutenant-Colonel of the regiment from May 9, 1868, until his retirement in early 1871.

Gallery Label: 
According to New York City Directories, Baker & McKenney were located at 63 Walker Street from 1865 to 1866. The original owner of this shako, Lewis Bayard Smith, served a total of seven years in Company "H" of the Seventh New York Infantry, enlisting in 1860 and taking his discharge as a Sergeant in 1867. He was a member of the Veteran Association of the Regiment and also belonged to the Military Society of the War of 1812, Saint Nicholas Society, and Sons of the Revolution. Smith attended New York University and, later, entered the tea and raw silk importation business as a partner with his uncle.

In the wake of Pearl Harbor, New York mobilized for war, and the New-York Historical Society was no exception. As the city braced for possible enemy attack, the New-York Historical Society took precautions to protect the collection as its staff members departed for the Armed Forces and defense factories. Nine New-York Historical Society staff members saw active duty during WWII. H. Maxson Holloway served in the Navy. Following the war, some of these men, such as Holloway, donated their uniforms to the museum.

The original owner of this shako, Isaac Remsen Lane (1840-1910), for ten years president of the Hanover Fire Insurance Company, of New York, was an enthusiastic veteran of the Seventh Regiment, N.Y.N.G., in United States service. He enlisted as a private at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, serving until 1863. He later saw service during the draft riots in New York City.
