According to the accession records, this helmet was found by workmen dismantling an old Dutch farmhouse in Brooklyn ca. 1890-1900 and then purchased from the workers who found it by a policeman named Stokes. The helmet has been associated with New Amsterdam's Stadthuis (Stadt Huys) or town hall and the eighteenth-century New York City Guard. Neither of these associations, however, can be confirmed.
