Description: 
Dark blue wool artillery trousers with 1 1/8" red stripe down the outsides of the legs trimmed with gilt lacing at the outer edges; button fly at the front has 5 buttons up the center, fabric tab at the top which fastensfrom the inside to the waistband at the right, 4 suspender buttons around the waistband; right side watch pocket beneath waistband beside red stripe, vertical slit pockets on both sides at the back edge of stripe; 2 straps on the back beneath waistband which buckle together at the center on rectangular metal buckle with double-tongued chape; pockets lined with white linen, waistband lined with black linen, leg hems lined with white linen; all buttons metal except 2 buttons for boot straps at the ankle inside each leg, made of carved bone.

Description: 
Black wool single-breasted chaplain's coat, with 1" closed stand-up collar lined with black velvet, shoulder straps with a crosier at the center of black ground, 5 silk-covered buttons down the center that button on the interior, braiding around the outer edges all around the coat, including collar, braiding radiating out from each button, with lozenge-shaped toggles on each end of the stripes; closed sleeves (no cuffs) with gilt sleeve knots; 3 1/2" vertical slit near the waistline on the left side; slit breast pockets lined with dark brown linen, right is vertical, left is horizontal, inside lined with nearly black (dark green?) silk, sleeves lined with white silk.

This chaplain's dress coat was worn by J. R. Paxton in 1888. Military chaplains received their first insignia in the form of a crosier, like that seen on this coat's shoulder straps, in 1880. The crosier insignia lasted until May 1888; this coat is dated May, 1888, making these shoulder straps one of the latest examples of this regulation insignia.

Dark blue wool Major's single-breasted coat with 2 1/8" closed stand-up collar (2 sets hooks and eyes), with Marjor's shoulder straps having a gold leaf on each end against a dark blue ground; closes down the front with 8 sets hooks and eyes, slit at each side at the hip; collar and outer edges trimmed with 2" flat black braiding, when fastened the 2 edges of braiding along the front meet; 4 panels on the back; dark (green?) twill-weave silk, vertical slit pocket on left breast, sleeves lined with white silk.

Olive drab wool Major's Ordnance Department double-breasted overcoat, with deep (5 1/2") closed double collar (2 sets hooks and eyes), with attachments beneath for cape (missing); 5 buttons down each side of the chest, vertical side pockets on both sides, left pocket lining is open to the inside of the coat, with button fastening; sleeves have no cuffs and are closed, with Major's rank black cord sleeve knots; back of bodice in 2 panels, pleated at the center beneath with 2 straps at the waistline which button together at the center with 2 buttons, skirt is slit; all buttons are horn; lined with olive drab twill-weave silk, with horizontal slit pocket on the left.

Dark blue enlisted man's artillery single-breasted shelljacket (short), with 2 1/2" closed stand-up collar (2 sets hooks and eyes) trimmed with red lace around the outer edges, 6 rows of lace at the throat terminating near the shoulder with 2 buttonsr; 12 unmarked buttons down the front; sleeves have no cuffs, but are open at the wrists with 2 buttons and a row of red lace surrounding, in a chevron shape on the outer side; hem edge trimmed with red lace; 2 panels at the back of the bodice with 2 vertical stripes of red lace; lined with green and white twill-weave wool, breast slightly padded, with vertical slit pocket on the left side, pocket and sleeves lined with white linen.

Blue and yellow wool General officer's tailcoat, with 3 1/2" closed stand-up collar (2 sets hooks and eyes near the throat), lapel sides of bodice curve towards the hip, with 7 buttons down each lapel; 6" (flat) sleeves, open false 3 3/4" cuffs have 2 buttons each; collar, lapels and cuffs are yellow with metal thread embroidering of oak leaves and acorns; 4 panels at the back of the bodice with 2 buttons near the center of the waist line, to the right and left just beneath the waistline are false pockets, with metal thread embroidering in the same design as the front, and 3 buttons in a row beneath; breast of bodice and tails lined with yellow wool, back of bodice and sleeves lined with white silk.
