Description:
Dress hat with blue wool crown with flat, circular top and black patent leather visor; gilded metal insignia in the form of a shield-breasted eagle surmounted by a cross with "UNITED SPANISH WAR VETERANS / 1898-1902" inscribed within borders of circular frame at center; chin strap of gold metallic cloth tape secured at either side by a button embossed with cross emblem similar to type referred to above.

"Chasseur pattern" gray wool felt forage cap; black patent leather visor which is flat and somewhat rectangular; soft crown with circular, countersunk top with black braid adjacent to edge; vertical strips of black braid on center front, center back, and either side of crown, joining a horizontal strip lining upper edge of black felt band at base of crown; gilded metal numeral "7" pinned to front of cap; chin strap made of narrow black cloth tape joined at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with initials "NG" centered between branches of laurel; brown leather sweatband and black textile lining.

Medium blue wool infantry officer's dress trousers with black piping down the side of each leg; 6 button fly (top 2 buttons fasten on the interior), 6 buttons around the waistband (one missing), right side watch pocket, vertical slit pockets at the seams of each hip; 2 straps below the waistband at the back which buckle at the center to rectangular metal buckle with double-tongued chape; waistline and pockets lined with white silk; 2 buttons near each seam inside the hems of both legs, for stirrup attachments.

Black Naval officer's dress waistcoat with lapels which are rounded at the bottom, no collar, 3 buttons at the stomach which are cast with an eagle clutching an anchor in its talons encircled by stars; the front is made of wool, the back is made of black silk, with 2 straps at the waist which buckle at the center onto rectangular buckle with double-tongued chape; lined with white twill-weave silk.

According to the accession record, this coat may have belonged to Henry W. Stanton (b. New York, ca. 1780. d. ca. 1855), who is said to have died ca. 1855 in a skirmish with Indians in New Mexico (Fort Stanton is said to be named for him). However, military expert Bruce Bazelon says that this coat is clearly of the Civil War era (post-1855), and he believes that the accession record actually refers to 1949.315, a pre-Civil War coat.

Dark blue wool serge double-breasted Corps of Engineers officer's (Lieutenant Colonel or Major) dress coat; 1 1/2" closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye) lined with black velvet; shoulder straps with dark blue velvet ground, with a leaf at each end, with remnants of epaulette attachments at the shoulders; 7 buttons down each side of the bodice, right side watch pocket at the waistline, closed false cuffs on 9 1/4" wide sleeves (flat) with 3 buttons at the wrists, 4 panels at the back of the bodice with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, a button on each side of split skirt; inside lined with dark green silk, slat slit pocket at the left breast, bodice lightly padded and quilted, sleeves lined with white twill-weave linen; all buttons represent Corps of Engineers, with an eagle in flight above the ocean, with a banner inscribed "ESSAYONS" in its beak, with 3-turreted castle at the left and cocade at the right.

Gallery Label:
The triple-turreted cast and "Essayons" on these Army corps of Engineer's buttons are among the oldest U.S. Army insignia still in use. The engineering corps dates from June 16, 1775, when the Continental Congress prescribed "a chief engineer for the Army in a separate department and two assistants under him." The castle insignia came into use around 1840. The image of the ocean refers to one of the earliest assignments of the corps, which was to construct harbor defenses.
