Dark blue wool single-breasted frock coat; 1 1/2" closed stand-up collar (one hook and eye); 9 buttons down the front; open sleeves with false cuffs, 2 buttons at each wrist; back of coat made in 4 panels, 2 buttons at the waistline near the center above split skirt with a pocket on each side; all buttons cast with shield-breasted eagle clutching a branch and arrows in its talons; bodice breast and skirt pockets lined with brown twill-weave cotton, breast lightly padded and quilted, sleeves lined with white cotton.

Light blue wool, hand made, single-breasted jacket with dark blue lacing; 2" closed stand-up collar (one hook and eye), with lacing trim and a button on each side of the collar; shoulder loops with lacing trim and a button at the collar ends; 12 buttons down the front; all buttons cast with shield-breasted eagle clutching a branch and arrows in its talons, all unmarked; closed sleeves (no cuffs), with chevron-shaped lacing design; back is in 4 panels; jacket lined with red and blue plaid wool flanel, sleeves lined with green cotton printed in geometric designs, vertical slit pocket at left breast.

In the wake of Pearl Harbor, New York mobilized for war, and the New-York Historical Society was no exception. As the city braced for possible enemy attack, the New-York Historical Society took precautions to protect the collection as its staff members departed for the Armed Forces and defense factories. Nine New-York Historical Society staff members saw active duty during WWII. H. Maxson Holloway served in the Navy. Following the war, some of these men, such as Holloway, donated their uniforms to the museum.

Pair of colonel's epaulets with added Marine Corps insignia; rigid, gold lace-covered strap with silver embroidered eagle and gilded metal button embossed with shield-breasted eagle, the shield bearing the letter "A"; silver-colored metal insignia with eagle atop a globe superimposed on an anchor centered inside gilded brass crescent; three layers of gold bullion fringe, the outermost measuring approximately 3 3/8 inches in length and 1/2 inch in diameter; black painted metal storage box which is rectangular with rounded corners, with hinged, flat-topped lid and red velvet-lined interior; oval interior compartment with detachable lid contains rectangular brass printing plate for a calling card enclosed in paper envelope (Z.3034ab).
