Description:
Cream-colored wool single-breasted Air Corps officer's summer off-duty coat; double collar and shallow lapels; shoulder straps with buttons at the collar ends; 4 buttons down the front; closed sleeves (no cuffs) with Air Corps insignia patch on the left shoulder, one band of white lacing around each wrist, 3 chevron stripes above lacing on left sleeve; a pocket at each breast and hip with flaps that button closed; all buttons cast with the Great Seal of the U.S.; 2 panels on the back, bottom of skirt split; front panels and top half of the back are lined with white satin, vertical slit pocket at the left breast.

Khaki-colored wool millitia officer's single-breasted coat, with 1 5/8" closed stand-up collar with "U.S. N.G." insignia at the corners of the collar, infantry crossed-rifle insignia near the shoulders, with "107" above; shoulder loops which button at the collar end, shield-breasted eagle insignia pinned to left loop; 5 buttons down the front; 4 pockets on the front, with flaps which button closed; closed sleeves (no cuffs) with one band of gold lacing around each wrist; 4 panels across the back; lined with brown twill-weave cotton.

Light blue wool militia private's greatcoat with closed double collar and shoulder cape; 2 buttons at the collar, 5 buttons down the front of the cape and 7 buttons down the front of the coat; right side horizontal slit watch pocket at the waistline; closed sleeves with chevron-shaped false cuffs, 1 button at each wrist; cape fastens to the bodice at the bottom center with buttons; 2 buttons near the center of the waistline, split skirt with vertical slit pocket on each side, 2 buttons on each pocket flap; all buttons cast with an eagle with a shield in its beak flying above a banner with "N.Y.S.A.", with "EXCELSIOR" above and "NATIONAL GUARD" below; coat lined with red wool, sleeves and pockets lined with white cotton.

This Air Force cape was worn by Colonel Stedman Shumway Hanks of New York during World War II; the Society owns the complete uniform. According to Col. Hanks, this uniform was not regulation issue in 1960 when it was donated. It was, however, required evening dress when the U.S.A.F. became a separate department of the War Department. It was required only for official receptions such as those at the White House and when military dignitaries held special meetings with foreign representatives.
