Pair of captain's epaulets; rigid, gold lace-covered strap with two silver embroidered bars, gilded metal button embossed with shield-breasted eagle inside a border of stars, and gilded brass crescent; gold bullion fringe measuring 2 3/4 inches in length and 1/4 inch in diameter attached to rigid cuff; padded rose silk lining and brass strap fastener; in black painted metal storage box with rounded ends, a half-cylindrical indentation at center front and back, and a hinged lid with flat top and wire handle; oval interior compartment, also with hinged lid, contains two shoulder straps and three pieces of brass hardware (2432j-n).

These trousers were worn by Colonel Stedman Shumway Hanks of New York during World War II; the Society owns the complete uniform. According to Col. Hanks, this uniform was not regulation issue in 1960 when it was donated. It was, however, required evening dress when the U.S.A.F. became a separate department of the War Department. It was required only for official receptions such as those at the White House and when military dignitaries held special meetings with foreign representatives.

According to the accession records, this epaulet was worn by Colonel Romulus Gildersleeve (1807/8-1895), great-grandfather of the donor. Gildersleeve was appointed an aide-de-camp to the Brigadier-General of the Second Brigade of Riflemen in 1825. His commission document, which is signed by Governor DeWitt Clinton, is in the collection of the New-York Historical Society.
