Description: 
Pair of naval officer's epaulets; rigid, gold lace-covered strap with pointed tab with gilded metal button embossed with an eagle atop an anchor; two layers of gold bullion fringe, the outermost measuring 3 3/8 inches in length and 3/8 inch in diameter; fringe end of strap trimmed with crescent-shaped border of gold bullion; cloth ties for fastening.

These epaulets were probably worn by William Rogers Taylor (1811-1889), who began his career in the Navy in 1828. After service in the Mexican-American War, Taylor did ordnance work in Washington. Promoted to captain in 1862, he commanded blockade vessels off Charleston, South Carolina, and was captain of the U.S.S. Juniata in the first attack on Fort Fisher, in December of 1864. He was promoted to rear admiral in 1871 and retired in 1873.

Description: 
Pair of infantry officer's shoulder knots; interlaced bronze-colored (originally gold?) braid, oblong in shape; circular patch at center with gold embroidered oak leaf on black ground, and gilded metal button at one end with "23" embossed at center and inscription, "VIGILANTIA / N.G.S.N.Y.," surrounding edge; black felt backing with lace ties and metal hook (missing from "e") for fastening.

Dark blue wool trousers of Grand Army of the Republic uniform with light blue piping down the side of each leg; 4 button fly, top button fastens on the interior, there is a tab to the left at the top which fastens to a button on the waistband; 6 buttons around the waistband, right side watch pocket beneath the waistband, vertical slit pockets behind each stripe; right rear pocket, 2 straps beneath the waistband which buckle at the center to rectangular metal buckle with double-tongued chape; all buttons plain metal, unmarked; waist area lined with white cotton with blue and gray pin stripes, pockets and fly lined with white cotton.

Light blue wool enlisted man's greatcoat with closed double collar and cape; 2 buttons at the collar, 5 buttons down the front of the cape, and 7 buttons down the front of the coat; closed sleeves with chevron-shaped false cuffs, 1 button at each wrist; cape buttons to the bodice at the back, bottom center, 2 buttons near the center of the waistline, split skirt with a vertical slit "EXCELSIOR / NATIONAL GUARD" surrounding an eagle with a shield in its beak flying above a banner; bodice lined with red twill-weave wool, sleeves lined with white cotton, tail pockets lined with white twill-weave cotton.

Khaki-colored wool Major General's double-breasted overcoat with closed double collar (2 sets hooks and eyes), 5 horn buttons down each side of the front, 2nd Division patch on the left shoulder with American Indian head in profile with red face and blue headdress, closed sleeves (no cuffs) with 2 bands of black lacing around each wrist, 2 stars between, 4-stripe overseas service chevron on left side, a vertical pocket at each hip with flaps which button closed; 1 panel on the back, pleated with 2 straps across the center at the waistline which fasten with 2 horn buttons, split skirt; lined with khaki-colored silk which is quilted in a diamond pattern, vertical slit pocket at the left breast, horizontal slit pocket at the right pocket.

Description: 
Pair of officer's epaulets; rigid, gold lace-covered strap with gilded metal button embossed with shield-breasted eagle, the shield bearing the initial "I"; gilded brass crescent surrounding circular patch with gold embroidered border and "13" embroidered in gold on red textile ground at center; three layers of gold bullion fringe, the outermost measuring approximately 3 1/8 inches in length and 1/4 inch in diameter; padded rose silk lining and elongated metal hook for fastening; in oblong black painted metal strorage with rounded corners, a hinged lid (now detached) with flat top and small wire handle, and fitted interior with blue velvet lining; oval compartment centered at bottom of box has top with a wedge-like addition on one side.
