Celebrate the origins of the holiday that commemorates the end of slavery. On June 19, 1865, military orders to free enslaved people were finally, officially enforced in Texas—two months after the end of the American Civil War and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Did you know that Memorial Day was first celebrated in recognition of the American Civil War? At the time, it was known as Decoration Day and individually observed by decorating the graves of fallen soldiers. Local communities held their own types of tributes earlier, but it was nationally proclaimed by an organization of Civil War veterans in 1868.

Did you know Harriet Tubman was the only woman who led a military operation during the American Civil War? On June 2, 1863, she led Union soldiers on a raid up the Combahee River in South Carolina and freed more than 700 slaves in the process.

Continental soldiers portrayed by Living Historians from the 3rd New Jersey Regiment, an American Revolution reenacting troop, will be stationed at the Museum to answer questions about life on and off the battlefield.
