Did you know that Memorial Day was first celebrated in recognition of the American Civil War? At the time, it was known as Decoration Day and individually observed by decorating the graves of fallen soldiers. Local communities held their own types of tributes earlier, but it was nationally proclaimed by an organization of Civil War veterans in 1868.
