Description: 
Gray wool New York National Guard dress trousers with 2 black 1/2" stripes down the side of each leg, black stripes separated by 1/4" white stripe; 4 button fly, top button fastens on the interior, fabric tab at the top which extends to the left and fastens to a button inside; 6 buttons around the waistband; right side watch pocket beneath waistband, horizontal slit pockets at the hips which button closed; 2 straps at the back beneath the waistband which buckle at the center to rectangular metal buckle with double-tongued chape, no rear pockets; waistband lined with white silk with blue pin stripes, pockets lined with white twill-weave cotton.

"Chasseur pattern" dark blue wool felt forage cap; black patent leather visor which is flat and somewhat rectangular; soft crown with circular, countersunk top with 1 1/2" square of red felt attached to center; "140" between curved branches of laurel(?) embroidered in heavy gold metallic thread on front; black patent leather chin strap secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with monogram "GAR"; leather sweatband and black textile lining.

According to the accession records, this cap was given to the 7th Regiment, National Guard New York, along with a uniform coat and trousers (1951.481a-b), by Lafayette Post No. 140 of the Grand Army of the Republic. The coat and trousers are apparently from the Civil War period, while the cap appears to date from the 1870s or later.

Description: 
Gray wool New York State National Guard single-breasted dress coat, with 3 3/4" closed stand-up collar ( 1 hook and eye) with "23" insignia on each side near the throat, attachments for epaulettes, originally with 7 buttons down the front (3 now missing), with black lacing on each side extending out from the buttons, closed sleeves (no cuffs) with 3 buttons each, with black lacing on each side extdending out from the buttons; 4 panels at the back of the bodice with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, a button on the bottom of each side of split skirt; all buttons cast with "23" and "VIGILANTIA / N.G.S.N.Y."; bodice and sleeves lined with white twill-weave cotton, the breast is lightly padded and quilted, vertical slit pocket at the left breast, skirt lined with black twill-weave cotton.

The donor believed that his grandfather had worn the hat in the War of 1812, but this seems unlikely given that the maker is not listed in the New York City Directory at the address indicated on the label until 1820.

Black or dark blue Naval officer's single-breasted coat, with 1 1/4" closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye), with anchor insignia on each side of the throat; 6 buttons down the front which fasten on the interior; gilt lacing trim around each wrist of closed sleeves (no cuffs) with metal star above; bodice slit at the sides, with 2 sets hooks and eyes to close the slits; 1 1/2" braid trim around the collar, outer edges and vertically incurving at the back of the bodice of coat; 3 panels at the back of the bodice; lined with black silk, breast lightly padded and quilted, vertical slit pocket at the left breast, horizontal slit pocket at the right breast.
