Description: 
Black beaver (textile) chapeau with rigid crown; wide border of black silk on edges of cock and fan; cockade in the form of a large, somewhat irregular black silk rosette with superimposed loop of twisted gold bullion attached to a gilded metal button embossed with an eagle perched on an anchor.

Shako with rigid, cylindrical black felt crown that is tapered and angled forward; flat black patent leather top and patent leather visor which is flat and somewhat rectangular; black patent leather chin strap secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with crossed cannon; gilded metal National Guard N.Y. shield affxed center upper edge of front; leather lining with lacing; pompon and front insignia plate missing.

The original owner of this shako, Isaac Remsen Lane (1840-1910), for ten years president of the Hanover Fire Insurance Company, of New York, was an enthusiastic veteran of the Seventh Regiment, N.Y.N.G., in United States service. He enlisted as a private at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, serving until 1863. He later saw service during the draft riots in the city.

Gray wool New York National Guard artillery dress trousers with 1 1/2" black stripe down the side of each leg; 6 button fly with fabric tab at the top extending to the left which fastens to a button inside, 6 buttons around the waistband, right side watch pocket beneath the waistband, horizontal slit pockets at the front hips which button closed; 2 straps at the back which buckle at the center on rectangular metal buckle with double-tongued chape, no rear pockets; all buttons plain metal with no markings; waistband and pockets lined with white twill-weave cotton.

Gray wool New York National Guard single-breasted artillery tailcoat with 1 1/2" closed stand-up collar (2 sets hooks and eyes) with gilt lacing fron the throat to the shoulder, a button on each side near the shoulder; remnants of epaulette attachments at the shoulders; 3 vertical rows of 10 buttons with horizontal rows of black lacing between the buttons; closed sleeves (no cuffs) with 4 buttons at each wrist against gilt lacing; 4 panels at the back of the bodice with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, false pockets at the center of the tails, with 4 buttons against gilt false pocket flaps, artillery shall and flame insignia at the bottom of each tail; each button cast with an eagle with a shield in its beak flying above a banner with "N.Y.S.A.", encircled by "EXCELSIOR / NATIONAL GUARD"; bodice lined with off-white silk, breast is heavily padded and quilted, "8 / NG" quilted on each breast, tails lined with dark green twill-weave cotton, vertical slit pocket in each tail.
