Flat-folding black beaver (textile?) chapeau with black ostrich feather trim on edges of cock and fan; two bands of wide black ribbon extend diagonally from base of cock (front), framing cockade consisting of a rosette superimposed with sequin-ornamented loop with embroidered oak leaf and laurel decoration; button with shield-breasted eagle below arc of thirteen stars attached at base of loop; leather sweatband and white silk lining.

Dark blue wool Marine Corps dress hat with dark blue braid in cruciform interlace pattern stitched to top; black leather visor; chin strap made of gold metallic cloth tape with red stripe attached to leather backing; metal front insignia in the form of a half-globe superimposed on an anchor and surmounted by an eagle; buttons securing chin strap embossed with an eagle clutching an anchor below an arc or thirteen stars.

According to the accession records, this cap was worn by the donor, Major Sidney Gilder de Kay, as a captain in the 12th Infantry Regiment, National Guard New York. de Kay saw active service as a major on the Mexican Border In 1916. In France, during World War I, he saw active service with the 106th U.S. Infantry of the 27th Division. He was wounded and gassed in the Meuse-Ar- Konne Offensive. While recovering from the gassing, he graduated from the Staff School and was appointed by Gen. John F. O'Rynn to his staff. After the war he became a lieutenant colonel in the Reserve. Various other parts of his uniform are also in the N-YHS Collection.

According to the accession records, this cap was worn by the donor, Charles Mackubin Lefferts (1873-1923), as an officer in Co. K, 7th Regiment, National Guard New York. Lefferts devoted the greater part of his life to historical research in the study of the uniforms worn by the contending armies in the American Revolutionary War which he delighted painting in water colors. The resulting illustrations, depicting the uniformed men of the American, British, French and German armies who took part in the American Revolution, were published for the first time by the New-York Historical Society. .

Dark blue wool Naval officer's double-breasted tailcoat with closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye at the throat) trimmed with gilt lacing around the outer edges, attachments for epaulettes at the shoulders, 9 buttons down each side of the front, closed sleeves (no cuffs) with single band of gilt lacing around each wrist with a 5-pointed star above; 4 panels at the back of the bodice with 2 buttons near the center of the waistline, a button at the bottom on each tail; all buttons cast with eagle perched on an anchor encircled by stars; lined with white silk, with vertical slit pocket on each tail near the waistline.

Dark blue wool militia infantry Captain's double-breasted dress coat; 2 3/4" closed stand-up collar (2 hooks and eyes) with light blue grosgrain ribbon around the collar band bordered with gilt lacing, lined with white satin, with 3 metal loops inside for collar form; metal screw attachments on the shoulders near the collar and fabric loops at the outer shoulders for epaulettes; 9 New York State militia buttons down both sides of the bodice, showing allegorical female figures on either side of an eagle crested shield; closed false cuffs (no buttons) trimmed with gilt band with Captain's gilt laced sleeve knots above 12th infantry regiment insignia above crossed rifles; 4 panels at the back of bodice with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, a button on each side of split skirt; coat lined with black satin, horizontal slit pocket inside right breast, vertical slit pocket inside left breast, pockets lined with white silk, sleeves lined with white satin with gray and green pin stripes.
