Description:
"Chasseur pattern" dark blue wool felt forage cap; black patent leather visor which is flat and somewhat rectangular; soft crown with circular, countersunk top with dark blue braid applied around edge; vertical strips of braid on center front, center back, and on either side of crown, joining horizontal strip applied 1 1/4" from lower edge; "7" between laurel(?) branches embroidered on front; black patent leather chin strap secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with initials "N.G." between branches of oak and laurel; brown leather sweatband and black silk lining.

Description:
Camel-colored cotton Infantry officer's single-breasted campaign jacket with 1 7/8" closed stand-up collar (2 sets hooks and eyes), brown shoulder loops with a button at the collar end, 5 buttons down the front; 4 pockets on the front, one at each breast and hip, with a pleat at the center of each pocket, all with button closure; closed sleeves with false cuffs in chevron shape; buttons cast with shield-breasted eagle clutching arrows and branches in its talons, with "I" on the shield; 2 panels at the back with pleat which is adjustable with lacing on the inside; inside unlined.

Black beaver chapeau with wide gold metallic cloth tape on edges of cock and fan, and a large embroidered button at each corner; cockade in the form of a rectangular strip of ribbon (upper half purple and lower half white), bisected vertically by a twisted loop of gold bullion extending from center point on upper edge of cock to gilded metal button below with two-headed eagle insignia; two additional loops of gold bullion (of irregular shape) also attached near center point on upper edge of cock.

Dark blue wool Naval officer's double-breasted dress coat with open double collar (no lapels), attachments for epaulettes at the shoulders, 9 buttons down each side of the front, closed sleeves (no cuffs) with single band of gilt lacing around each wrist with a 5-pointed star above; 4 panels at the back of the bodice with 2 buttons near the center of the waistline, a button at the bottom on each side of split skirt; all buttons cast with eagle perched on an anchor encircled by stars; coat lined with black silk, with horizontal slit pocket at the left breast, sleeves lined with white silk.

According to the accession records, this chapeau belonged to George Elmore Ide, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1861 to 1901. Ide's uniform coat, vest and epaulets are also in the N-YHS Collection. The donor was apparently Ide's daughter-in-law. Her husband, John Jay Ide (d. 1962), was a great-great grandson of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States.
