Description: 
Leather, cotton, and brass sword belt; stitched, black leather-covered canvas sword belt with loop sewn near center of belt suspending scabbard sling with brass hook at end that fastens to scabbard sling, brass hook, and circular frog sewn on left side of belt, and with rectangular brass plate at right end that fastens to clip on left; plate has stamped eagle in center with shield on breast, three arrows in one talon, branch in other talon, and flanked by wreath at bottom, with rayed background, thirteen stars, and scroll inside inscription at top.

Dark blue artillery officer's double-breasted frock coat; 1 1/2" open stand-up collar lined with dark blue velvet; colonel's shoulder straps, with eagle against red ground; 7 buttons down each side of the front; closed 9 3/4" wide (flat) sleeves (no cuffs) with 3 buttons at each wrist; back made in 4 panels, 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, a button on each side of split skirt; all buttons cast with shield-breasted each with "A" at the center; coat lined with green silk, sleeves lined with white silk, horizontal slit pocket at the left breast, breast lightly padded and quilted.

According to the accession records, this chapeau was worn by Captain Thomas Fisher (1839-1879), the donor's uncle. On September 1, 1861 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd New York Volunteer Infantry (also known as the Troy Regiment). Fisher saw action at Battle of Big Bethel, Fair Oaks, Malvern hill, Groveton, the second Bull Run and Chantilly. He also took part in the battle of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on December 31, 1862. The "Troy Daily Times," in the listing of returning officers from New York, noted that 1st Lieutenant Thomas H. Fisher of Company G of the 2nd New York Volunteers had been Aid-de-camp on General Mott's staff. Fisher was one of the first officers of the 22nd Infantry after it was reconstituted in 1866. Fisher was awarded a Brevet Promotion to Captain on March 2, 1867 and served until his death on July 4, 1879.

Officer's cap with dark blue wool felt crown which is soft, cylindrical, tapered, and angled forward, with a rigid circular top; "U.S." embroidered in silver between branches of laurel embroidered in gold on front; rigid black patent leather visor which is flat and somewhat rectangular; black patent leather chinstrap secured at either side by gilded brass button embossed with shield-breasted eagle, the shield bearing the initial "I"; black silk lining padded with fleece.

According to the accession records, this cap was worn by William Packer Prentice during the American Civil War. Packer was commissioned as assistant adjutant-general, with the rank of captain of volunteers, on November 26, 1861 and was promoted to the rank of major on September 2, 1862, and became lieutenant-colonel and adjutant-general of the Tenth Army Corps and chief of staff to Major-General Ormsby McKnight Mitchell in October, 1862. He resigned from the army on December 23, 1862.
