These captain's shoulder straps were worn by Loren Wellington Tuller (1839-1914), who served as Lieutenant, Captain and Brevet Major with the 60th Regiment, New York State Volunteers, 1862-1865. Tuller was later a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Military Order of the Loyal Legion.

Dress hat with soft dark blue wool felt crown which is cylindrical, with slight forward angle, pointed lower edge in back, and flat and rigid circular top; black patent leather visor and chinstrap; black textile lining and black leather sweatband; one gilded brass button embossed with shield-breasted eagle found pinned to sweatband.

This hat belonged to First Lieutenant Abram P. Haring, who served in Company G of the 132nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. The 132nd was also known as the "Second Regiment", or "Spinola's Empire Brigade". Soldiers from Company G were recruited principally from Suspension Bridge, Buffalo, New York City, and Brooklyn.

This sash is part of a uniform worn by Noah L. Farnham in Washington August 14, 1861, when he died of wounds received at the Battle of Bull Run. He served as Lieutenant Colonel in the First New York Zouaves (11th New York State Volunteers) during the Civil War. His funeral was held August 17th at Christ Church on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Gallery Label: 
These cavalry shoulder loops were taken off the jacket of Major General Stephen D. Ramseur. Ramseur was wounded and captured by Sheridan in the Battle of Winchester, and was commanding infantry at the time of his death. This information comes from both a letter found with the loops dated Oct. 22, 1864, from J. Y Culyer, the chief clerk of the U.S. Sanitation Commission, and military uniform historian Bruce Bazelon (1988).

Dark blue wool single-breasted artillery chasseur jacket; 1 3/4" closed stand-up collar (one hook and eye), with red at te throat; 9 buttons down the front, watch pocket on the right near the third button from the bottom; closed sleeves with false cuffs, 3 buttons at the wrist; all buttons cast with an eagle above quadrant shield encircled by stars; back made in 4 panels; red piping around all outer edges; jacket lined with white cotton, breast lightly padded and quilted, short skirt at the bottom lined with red silk.
