Description:
Dark blue wool enlisted man's full dress single-breasted coat, with gold-colored closed stand-up collar (2 hooks and eyes), with "ET" embroidered with metal thread near the edge on both sides; gold knots on the shoulders, 3 vertical rows of 6 buttons each down the front, with black cord lacing between the rows; gilt sleeve knots on each sleeve; 2 incurving vertical rows of black cord lacing on the back, each met with a button at the waistline; inside of bodice lined with white silk, bodice lightly padded and quilted, with metal clasp buckle at the waistline, vertical slit pocket at the left breast, short split skirt of coat lined with black silk.

Description:
Dark blue wool officer's tailcoat with 3 1/2" stand-up double collar; collar, lapels and cuffs are of yellow wool; lapels have ten 1 3/8" plain unmarked buttons down each side; gilt shoulder loops on each shoulder with bullion trim; close fitting sleeves; a pocket at each hip from the center rear to near the center front edge, each pocket has a flap with 4 blind buttonholes, with a row of 4 buttons beneath flap; 4 panels at the back of the bodice, with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline and a button on the bottom of each tail; coat and pockets lined with white linen.

Dress hat with soft, oval, dark blue wool felt crown, and visor with sequined oak leaf sprays embroidered in gold on black felt ground; embroidered front insignia consisting of a shield over crossed anchors with eagle with outstretched wings above; chin strap made of gold metallic cloth tape secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with an eagle perched on an anchor; brown leather sweatband and black textile lining.

Documents received from the donor indicate that this parade cap belonged to her grandfather, August Westhoff, who enlisted in New York City on May 3, 1861, and was mustered in as a private in Co. D of the 20th Regiment, New York Turner Rifle Volunteers, on May 6, 1861. Westhoff fought in the Battle of Antietam, which took place in September of 1862, was promoted to corporal on December 12, 1862, and was mustered out with his company on June 1, 1863, in New York City.

According to the accession record, these epaulets were worn by Caleb Smith Woodhull (1792-1866), the donor's grandfather. Woodhull served in the War of 1812 with the New York State militia, although these epaulets date later than that war. He was elected mayor of New York in 1849. The Society owns a number of the family's papers.
