Description: 
Dark blue wool officer's double-breasted frock coat, with 3/4" closed stand-up collar lined with dark blue velvet, yellow metal epauletters with 3/8" bullion on the shoulders (no insignia), 7 buttons on each side down the front, 3 buttons on each closed, false cuff; 4 panels at the back of the bodice, with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline and a button near the bottom of each side of the split skirt; all buttons cast with the Great Seal; inside lined with dark green silk, bodice lightly padded and quilted except the center back 2 panels, slit pocket at the left breast, 2 sets of hooks and eyes at the opening of the waist, sleeves lined with white silk.

Dark blue wool officer's dress trousers, with 5 button fly having a tab at the top left which fastens to an inside button; 6 buttons around the waistband, right side watch pocket beneath the waistband, 2 front pockets and 2 rear pockets, 2 straps at the back under the waistband which buckle at the center; waistline and rear pockets lined with silk, front pockets lined with blue and white gingham linen; inside hems of legs lined with linen; all buttons unmarked.

According to the accession records, these epaulets were worn by George Creighton Webb (1853-1948) as an Inspector-General in the U.S. Army. If this is the case, then they were probably made in the late 19th century. It appears, however, that the Horstmann firm was in business as Horstmann Sons & Drucker only from 1845 to 1850 (see Bazelon and McGuinn, "A Directory of American Military Goods, Dealers & Makers, 1785-1885," 1987, p. 41).

White silk dress shirt with accompanying starched collar, black bow tie and dress jewelry; shirt has 3/4" closed stand-up collar which buttons at the throat to detachable starched 2" stand-up collar with circular metal collar button with shank; stiffly starched bib at the breast, with 3 circular metal stirt studs having shanks of cylindrical bars, bottom of shirt is open and has rounded corners; open cuffs with monogrammed cuff links, cuff links are in 2 rectangular pieces with oblique corners, joined with a metal link at the shanks; narrow yoke across the shoulders on reverse, with fabric loop at the center for bow tie.

This Air Force tailcoat was worn by Colonel Stedman Shumway Hanks of New York during World War II; the Society owns the complete uniform. According to Col. Hanks, this uniform was not regulation issue in 1960 when it was donated. It was, however, required evening dress when the U.S.A.F. became a separate department of the War Department. It was required only for official receptions such as those at the White House and when military dignitaries held special meetings with foreign representatives.
