Description: 
Dark blue wool serge double-breasted officer's dress coat; 1" closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye); metal attachments at the shoulders for epaulettes; 7 buttons down both sides of bodice, both sides of the bodice have buttonholes; closed false cuffs have 3 buttons and 3 vertical stripes of gilt lace with a button at the top of each; 4 panels at the back of the bodice with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, a button on each side of split skirt; inside lined wtih black twill-weave silk, sleeves lined with white twill-weave silk, breast lightly padded and quilted, each side of skirt has a pocket lined with brown linen; all buttons cast with shield-breasted eagle clutching a branch and arrows.

Emilio Buch lived in New York City after his marriage, in 1870, to Eliza Baldwin.

Dark blue serge single-breasted tailcoat; 2 1/2" stand-up collar (1 hook and eye) with metal leaf garland embroidery, motif repeated at the open cuffs (2 buttons); 9 buttons down the front of the bodice; 4 panels at the back, with metal leaf bouquet embroidery at the center of the waistline flanked by buttons, a button at the bottom of each tail; bodice and tails lined with white moiré, breast, collar and shoulder yoke of bodice lightly padded and quilted; all buttons cast with shield-breasted eagle with a banner above inscribed "E PLURIBUS UNUM".

Dark blue wool New York National Guard Veteran Corps Artillery double-breasted officer's dress coat, with 1 1/2" closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye) lined with dark blue velvet, metal attachments at the shoulders for epaulettes, 7 buttons down each side of the fronts, with right side watch pocket, closed false cuffs with 3 buttons, flared skirt; 4 panels at the back of the bodice, with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, a button on each side of the split skirt; bodice buttons cast with "N 7 G" encircled with crossed branches, cuff buttons cast with eagle flying with a shield in its beak above a banner reading "NYSA"; coat lined with dark green twill-weave cotton, sleeves lined with white silk, breast lightly padded and quilted, vertical slit pocket on left breast.

Dark blue wool Admiral's double-breasted tailcoat with double collar and lapels, each lapel has 5 buttonholes from shoulder to stomach beside a row of 5 buttons; closed sleeves (no cuffs) have 2 bands of gilt lacing around the wrists, the lower band is 2 1/4" wide, upper band is 5/8" wide, with 5-pointed metal star insignia above; 4 panels at the back of the bodice, with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline and a button on the bottom of each tail; all buttons cast with eagle clutching an anchor above 3 cannon balls surrounded with stars; bodice and tails lined with dark green silk, sleeves lined with white silk, horizontal slit pocket at the left breast.

"Chasseur pattern" blue wool felt forage cap; soft crown with circular, countersunk top with dark braid applied in cruciform pattern with diamond shape at center and four loops surrounding; black patent leather visor, which is flat and somewhat rectangular; five narrow strips of braid applied to each side of crown, to back of crown, and to base of crown; embroidered insignia on front consisting of initials "N.D." between branches of laurel; chin strap made of narrow black cloth tape secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with shield-breasted eagle; leather sweatband and black silk lining.

Olive drab wool Army General's double-breasted overcoat; 3 1/2" stand-up double collar with hook and eye at the throat, 4 horn buttons down each breast, "2" applied to top left shoulder (not original), 3-stripe chevron below elbow on left sleeve, each closed sleeve (no cuffs) has 2 strips of brown silk lacing around each wrist with 3 silver-colored 5-pointed stars between the stripes; 2 panels at the back of the bodice, with 2 straps at the waistline which fasten at the center to 2 horn buttons, split skirt; bodice lined with olive drab twill-weave linen, horizontal slit pocket at the right breast.

Medium blue wool Marine officer's dress trousers with red stripe down the sides of both legs; 5 button fly has fabric tab at the top left which fastens fo a plastic button on the inside of the waistband, and there is a metal hook and eye at the top above the buttons; 7 belt loops around the waistband; watch pocket on right side beneath waistband, vertical slit pockets on each hip behind the stripes, rear horizontal slit pockets which button closed; fly, waistband and pockets lined with white cotton, 6 ivory buttons inside the waistband.

Dark blue Air Force Colonel's evening double-breasted tailcoat with gold shoulder knots; left lapel bears silver-colored metal aircraft pilot's wings, with shield flanked by spread wings, 2 buttons on each side of the breast, Colonel's sleeve knots on each sleeve above insignia of spread wings with a propeller at the center, gilt and sky blue lace band beneath knows, no cuffs on the sleeves; 4 panels at the back of the bodice, with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, a button at the bottom of each tail; all buttons are gold cast with the great seal of the U.S.; inside lined with black satin, horizontal slit pocket at the right breast.

This Air Force tailcoat was worn by Colonel Stedman Shumway Hanks of New York during World War II; the Society owns the complete uniform. According to Col. Hanks, this uniform was not regulation issue in 1960 when it was donated. It was, however, required evening dress when the U.S.A.F. became a separate department of the War Department. It was required only for official receptions such as those at the White House and when military dignitaries held special meetings with foreign representatives.
