Soft, brimless bluish gray wool felt cap with a yellow band around lower edge, and gilded metal "A" pinned to front; black patent leather chin strap; light brown leather sweatband and black textile lining.

According to the accession records, this cap was worn as part of the uniform of Squadron A of the New York Hussars, organized ca. 1885 as an independent troop of cavalry (National Guard New York, 1889- ). The donor, who was a member of Squadron A, purchased his uniform at Brooks Brothers in New York City and wore it throughout his service, from 1899-1910. Other parts of his uniform are also in the N-YHS Collection.

Description: 
Navy blue wool enlisted man's single-breasted Cavalry shell jacket, with 2 1/4" closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye) trimmed around the outer edge with lacing, with 2 lacing straps at the throat on each side decorated with buttons; 11 buttons down the front, open sleeves (no cuffs) with 2 buttons at each wrist, lacing around the wrists in a chevron design; lacing around the outer edges of the coat; 4 panels at the back with 2 vertical rows of lacing; all lacing of yellow cotton twill; all buttons unmarked, cast with shield-breasted eagle clutching arrows and branches; coat lined with green and brown wool twill-weave fabric, sleeves lined with white plain-weave cotton.

Description: 
White linen Paymaster General's summer waistcoat with 1" stand-up collar; front made of duck cloth, with 9 buttons down the front, all buttons cast with shield-breasted eagle clutching arrows and branches in its talons, surrounded with stars, shanks of the buttons secured to waistcoat with coils of metal wire, 3 pockets on the front; reverse is made of plain weave linen, with 2 sets of adjustable straps, one set which ties below the shoulder blades, the other set at the waistline which buckles at the center onto rectangular buckle with double-tongued chape; lined with white plain weave linen.

Description: 
Black wool New York National Guard double-breasted artillery dress coat with epaulets; coat has 1" closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye) lined with dark blue velvet; attachments for epaulets at the shoulders; 7 buttons down each side of the front, cast with "N 7 G" at the center surrounded by a garland; 3 buttons at closed false cuffs of each 7 1/2" sleeve (flat), cast with eagle with shield in its beak above a banner inscribed "NYSA"; 4 panels at the back of the bodice with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, a button at the bottom of each side of split skirt; inside lined with dark green twill-weave silk, bodice is lightly padded and quilted, split skirt has a vertical slit pocket on each side at the center, pockets lined with white silk, sleeves lined with white twill-weave silk; epaulettes have gold cord braid along the shoulders with "V / NG" at the center of red wool ground, lined with red wool with hinged metal attachment device which latches to a metal hook.

Black wool Naval officer's dress trousers with a stripe of gilt lacing along the side of each leg; vertical 5 button fly with a tab at the top left with 2 buttons which fasten to a strap of pin striped silk on the inside; slit right side watch pocket at the waistline, 7 buttons around the waistband, 2 buttonholes at the waistband on either side of the first left side button; waistband, fly and watch pocket lined with white silk, the hem of each leg lined with brown silk.
